We just made 167 recycled "uchiwa" fans for use at the summer festival. Islanders collected unused fans (some even several decades old!) then the core members of our festival planning committee applied newly printed labels to one or both faces of the fans. We will pass them out for free to anyone who joins in the traditional Ajishima dance during the festival. It will be mind-meltingly hot and humid, so any extra breeze will definitely be welcome!
We considered buying new fans and even having a big corporate sponsor supply the fans for free with their adverts on one side, but in keeping with our mission of transitioning away from unsustainable practices and trying to find more earth friendly ones, we decided on the recycled option. Of course, we still chose to print and have shipped a bunch of labels, but it is all about the transition; the journey is the destination!!!
We hope to see you at the festival. Please reserve your accommodations here if you haven't already. See you soon!
